Be Still: From Unity to Universe, a song from silence
For thousands of years, humanity has sought to unravel the enigma of the universe’s birth. Ancient myths from different cultures and eras offer fascinating stories that attempt to explain how and why existence came to be. However, these myths often use symbolism and metaphors that are difficult to interpret scientifically. The Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is a state of matter that exists at the fringes of quantum physics and could serve as a link between ancient knowledge and modern science.
BEC is a state where the temperature is close to absolute zero, and every particle is in perfect quantum coherence. In this state, particles merge to form a single quantum wave, and individuality dissolves. This state of balance, without the fluctuations and individuality that we see in our world, allows us to imagine a universe before the Big Bang, where only this ethereal quantum soup existed.
But could this equilibrium have remained forever undisturbed? Here, even the simplest form of consciousness could be a catalyst. Interacting or observing the BEC introduces a perturbation, which sets off a series of quantum events that transform the serene quantum pond into a churning ocean. Entangled particles collapse into distinct states, fluctuations amplify, and drastic changes occur.
